500 Seeds

Grow Gayfether from freshly harvested Liatris spicata wildflower seeds. Gayfeather is a stunning, flowering plant that matures to a height of about 24 to 48 inches tall. The plants establish upwards, producing tall stems. Each stem contains rows and rows of gorgeous, fluffy purple flowers. The flowers of Gayfeather are nectar rich, attracting an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, hummingbirds and ladybugs as well.

Grown as a perennial flowering plant, Gayfeather will establish a deep root system the first growing season. The plants will wilt on the surface with the first frost, only to return the following season. Gayfeather can be used in a number of settings, including perennial flower beds, along driveways, walkways & borders, or even in a naturalized setting. They are also a popular pick to mix with other butterfly attracting varieties to create the perfect butterfly garden.

These plants, interestingly enough, will bloom from the top down. Once mature, the plants can make an excellent cut flower, for use in floral arrangements and bouquets as well.

Sowing The Seed

Gayfeather seeds are best established directly outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Begin by prepping your sowing area, ridding it of all unwanted plant life. Scatter the seeds to the surface of the soil, lightly pressing them down so that direct light is still able to reach the seeds. This is crucial for proper germination.

Growing Conditions

Gayfeather will enjoy an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day. Temperatures should be at least 68F or above and the soil can be neutral, but well drained. Gayfeather will also tolerate poor soils and can be quite drought resistant as well. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily with a light mist setting until germination occurs.

Germination & Growth

Your Gayfeather seeds will begin to germinate in roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants can reach a mature height of roughly 24 to 48 inches tall and can be spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart from one another. These beauties will produce gorgeous, fluffy blooms along tall stems, all summer long. They will attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden, and are perfect for floral arrangements & bouquets as well.
