What does it mean for a dish to be delicious?
Sharing a meal with loved ones is a cherished experience that brings us closer together. The aroma, taste, and flavor of the food create lasting memories and connections. But for individuals with taste and smell impairments, this experience can be challenging, leaving them unable to fully enjoy the culinary delights.
In light of this, the World Taste & Smell Association is proud to announce the first annual #DeliciousForAll Culinary Challenge. This groundbreaking initiative aims to raise awareness about taste and smell impairments while fostering inclusivity in the world of dining. In collaboration with renowned culinary experts and scientists, we invite you to join us on this flavorful journey as we celebrate the power of taste and smell in creating unforgettable culinary moments.
Amplified by the global COVID-19 pandemic, the number of individuals worldwide experiencing compromised taste and smell has surpassed 50 million. Temporary seasonal allergies, chronic sensory disorders, and the lingering effects of COVID-19 have left many unable to fully savor the joys of food. It's time to change that.
"The mission of the #DeliciousForAll Culinary Challenge is to create an inclusive culinary landscape catering to all, including those with taste and smell impairments," says Brad Barnes, Chairman of #DeliciousForAll and a world-renowned Master Chef. "We invite you to embark on this flavorful journey with us as we search for delectable recipes that everyone can savor, regardless of their sensory abilities."
Taste and smell impairments affect far more people than we realize. The COVID-19 pandemic has drawn attention to these disorders, with over 15 million individuals worldwide expected to experience a taste or smell disorder lasting at least six months due to the virus. Additionally, an estimated 5% of the population already suffers from smell dysfunctions caused by various factors such as brain injuries, diseases, aging, or reactions to drugs.
The #DeliciousForAll Culinary Challenge aims to raise awareness about these impairments while inspiring our community of passionate food enthusiasts, home cooks, and professional chefs to create and share recipes that anyone can enjoy. "The judges are looking for mouth-watering, multi-sensory dishes that are truly "delicious for all," catering to those with sensory or dietary restrictions. Whether you're a hobbyist or a professional, we welcome your participation,"Β addsΒ Mindy YangΒ (Yes! Perfumarie's Founder; She is also World Taste & Smell Association's Chief Engagement Officer.)
The #DeliciousForAll Culinary Challenge is open to individuals aged 18 or older in the United States. Submit your entries in one of the following categories: Savory Bite/Dish, Sweet Treat, or Beverage. Finalists will have the chance to win generous cash prizes, receive mentorship from industry professionals, and have their recipes published and featured in various media outlets.
"We invite companies to become sponsors, scientists and culinary professionals to join as judges, and individuals suffering from chemosensory impairments to assist in judging the recipes. Additionally, we need volunteers to help produce this exciting and important event. By participating in this challenge, you'll contribute to a vital initiative to create an inclusive culinary landscape for everyone,"Β Mindy adds.
Join us on this flavorful journey and help us spread joy, awareness, and support during the holiday season and beyond. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to enjoying the pleasures of dining.Β
