“Tolerant of your beliefs. Judgemental of your shoes.”
A saying that has stuck with me about New York since I heard it my first year of living here. First impressions are unavoidable wherever you go with whomever you meet. New York is no exception--perhaps even extreme. This is one of the most tolerant cities in the world, but it is also a city where your appearance is everything. I feel fortunate to get to know a wide variety of New Yorkers featured in Quoted, who at first glance, seem to be very different from me.
But then I find an unexpected sameness as I get to know them beyond their appearance. I love it every time that happens. By introducing you to a mix of locals sharing their unpolished truth, my hope with Quoted has always been to increase the recognition and tolerance of differences between us, but also to let you discover that we’re more alike than we think we are. That’s the privilege of running Quoted. That’s the privilege of living in a city like New York, which shows us it still has the capacity to surprise.
In this issue of Quoted, you’ll get the variety of unfiltered encounters with New Yorkers you’ve come to expect from us. They each share stories concerning their appearance and perceptions of the city in one way or another. I hope you take your time to get a moment of intimacy with a New Yorker you usually would judge by their cover.
Enjoy! Every story, Quoted.
